Avvenire: “Maestro Muti conducts the Orchestra of the Sea at Opera: Music Without Barriers in prison”

“On stage, the young musicians will play instruments built by inmates using wood from migrants’ boats, in the new ‘Don Luigi Pedrollo’ Theatre.”

“Even in those who have committed heinous crimes or taken the wrong paths, I have perceived a willingness to open themselves to beauty,” Maestro Muti declares, explaining the origins of the special event that will take place on January 10. Long convinced of the ethical and social value of music, Riccardo Muti has often brought concerts into prisons, from the Ravenna Remand Prison to juvenile detention centers in Chicago—“all extraordinary experiences from a human point of view.”

“I am grateful to Maestro Muti,” comments Arnoldo Mosca Mondadori, President of the Fondazione Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti, “because his Orchestra Giovanile Cherubini will give voice to those migrants forced to flee by crossing a tragic sea, as well as to all inmates, countering the culture of exclusion with art and beauty.”

“The reconstruction of the theatre, which will be inaugurated by Muti on Saturday, is the result of the convergence of goodwill determined to play their part immediately: in just two weeks, the hall was transformed into a modern 400-seat theatre, thanks to the generosity of private companies such as Techbau, which donated the heating and cooling system.”
