Techbau Selected to Deliver Digital Realty’s ROM1 Data Center
Project to Enhance Rome’s Digital Infrastructure and Support the City’s Growing Innovation Ecosystem
ROME, Italy – December 11, 2025 – Techbau S.p.A., an Italian developer of complex infrastructure, has been selected to design and construct (EPC) Digital Realty’s new ROM1 data center in Italy. Drawing on its extensive experience in data centers and large-scale technological infrastructure, Techbau will support integrated management across all construction phases, aiming to uphold high standards of quality, safety, and environmental sustainability.
The company, recognized nationally for its work on data centers, contributes to Italy’s digital development and serves as a reference for international operators investing in the country. With ROM1, Digital Realty aims to enhance its connectivity network and digital services in Central and Southern Italy, extend its reach across the Mediterranean region, and support the development of a new technology hub in the capital.
The project involves the reuse and redevelopment of the former ACEA management center on Via delle Testuggini (Municipio Roma IX). Located less than 15 kilometers from the coast, ROM1 is planned to cover a total area of approximately 5,000 sqm, corresponding to the first operational phase of the project. It is planned to be divided into four modules of 0.8 megawatts (MW) each, for a total installed IT capacity of 3.2MW.
The infrastructure as envisaged will include Meet Me Rooms, ICT Rooms, Electrical Rooms, UPS areas, battery rooms, and internal cooling areas, designed to ensure maximum operational efficiency and safety. The highly connected, cloud- and carrier-neutral ROM1 data center will be designed to support the most advanced artificial intelligence applications and ensure access to a vast ecosystem of global and regional telecommunications operators.
Ready for interconnection with various submarine cable systems, the site is planned to serve as a strategic hub connecting Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The data center as currently designed has achieved the Uptime Institute Tier IV Certification of Design Documents, which maximizes the effectiveness of the facility, ensuring the proposed design meets the intended Tier objective. This is the first step toward the Tier IV Certification of Constructed Facility, which attests to the highest level of infrastructure reliability and resilience. Once the data center is fully built, it will be one of the largest data centers in the country, powered by 100% renewable energy, with the aim of reducing environmental impact and promoting the transition to zero-emission digital infrastructure.
The collaboration between Techbau and Digital Realty stems from a shared vision: to promote a development model that integrates technological innovation with environmental sustainability. Both companies share an approach based on design quality, energy efficiency, and local development, with the goal of creating resilient and digitally connected infrastructures capable of supporting the country’s growth and the sustainable transformation of cities.
